What is a Richie Brace?

A Richie Brace is a custom-made ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) designed to support the foot and ankle while still allowing natural movement.

Unlike bulky walking boots or rigid braces, a Richie Brace combines the support of a custom orthotic with stabilising uprights around the ankle, providing excellent control without significantly restricting your mobility.

Whether you’re struggling to walk comfortably, finding it difficult to stay active, or looking to avoid surgery, a Richie Brace may be an effective treatment option.

What Conditions Can a Richie Brace Help Treat?

Richie Braces are commonly prescribed for a variety of foot and ankle conditions, including:

  • Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction (PTTD)
  • Adult Acquired Flatfoot
  • Severe overpronation
  • Arthritis affecting the foot and ankle
  • Chronic ankle instability
  • Recurrent ankle sprains
  • Tendon injuries
  • Midfoot arthritis
  • Certain neurological conditions affecting walking
  • Foot and ankle pain that has not responded to orthotics alone

How Does a Richie Brace Work?

A Richie Brace works by controlling excessive movement of the foot and ankle while allowing you to continue walking as naturally as possible.

The custom orthotic footplate supports the arch and improves foot alignment, while lightweight side uprights stabilise the ankle and reduce strain on injured tendons and ligaments. By improving the way forces travel through the foot and ankle, the brace helps reduce pain, improve balance and make walking more comfortable.

Why Choose a Richie Brace Instead of a Standard Ankle Brace?

Fully Custom-Made

Made specifically for your individual foot shape, biomechanics and diagnosis.

Superior Support

Provides significantly more control than off-the-shelf ankle braces.

Reduces Pain & Inflammation

Helps calm irritated tendons and joints by improving alignment.

Allows Natural Movement

Supports the foot and ankle while still letting you walk functionally.

Your Assessment at Happy Feet NI

Before prescribing a Richie Brace, we carry out a comprehensive biomechanical assessment to understand exactly what’s causing your symptoms.

We’ll assess your walking pattern, foot posture, joint movement and tendon function before deciding whether a Richie Brace is the best treatment for you. In some cases custom foot orthoses or rehabilitation exercises may be more appropriate, while others benefit from the additional support that only a Richie Brace can provide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I need to wear my Richie Brace all the time?

Not necessarily. Most patients wear their brace during activities that place stress on the foot and ankle, such as walking, work or exercise. We’ll advise you on the most appropriate wearing schedule for your condition.

Can I wear a Richie Brace in normal shoes?

Yes. Richie Braces are designed to fit into many supportive everyday shoes and trainers. We can also advise you on suitable footwear.

Is a Richie Brace better than custom orthotics?

They serve different purposes. Custom orthotics support the foot, while a Richie Brace supports both the foot and the ankle. If your condition involves significant ankle instability or tendon dysfunction, a Richie Brace may provide greater control.

Can a Richie Brace help me avoid surgery?

For some patients, yes. While every case is different, a Richie Brace can often help manage symptoms, improve function and reduce pain, potentially delaying or avoiding surgery when appropriate.

How long does it take to receive my Richie Brace?

Once your assessment and measurements or scan have been completed, your custom brace is manufactured specifically for you. We’ll let you know the expected turnaround time and arrange a fitting appointment as soon as it arrives.
